The Cave of the Springs of Aggitis River

Located in Kokkinogia
The cave (23 km from the city of Drama) is one of the few karstic in Greece. In essence, it is a long underground pipeline that drains the waters of the mountain plateau of Kato Nevrokopi. This phenomenon is extremely important from a scientific and tourist point of view and was already recorded by travelers and scholars in the 19th century. Approximately 40 years ago, the exploration of the cave began from the so-called “hall of the wheel”. The water wheel has been used for irrigation purposes in the past and access to its hall can be gained through the characteristic natural opening (doline or karsthole) on the top of the cave. Interesting is the fauna of the cave, which consists of a few fish, a limited number of aquatic mammals (e.g. otters) and, of course, bats. Archaeological evidence has linked the cave with various historical periods of growth in the wider region.
